Teaching

Teaching practice encompasses work with learners of all ages where I am expected to take a lead in facilitating learning as part of an educational context.

I acted as one of a small team of tutors for this four week course held in Kotor, Montenegro and titled 'UNESCO-ALNeT Summer School for Teacher Educators from Developing Countries', with participants from Mexico, Mauritius, Morocco, China, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Bulgaria and Hungary.

My answer to the question 'is multimedia the new design paradigm?' was - 'There is no reason to leave out any sensory channel with current technology; but participative, communicative & learner-centred may better define the new design paradigm.'

This summer school run by Anglia Polytechnic University to encourage young people to aspire to university had a major workshop component which Ultralab ran - I helped organise and present at this one which focussed on the business of waste handling, recycling and disposal. The young people researched this theme and produced their own digital movie to communicate the outcomes of their work.

I ran a workshop on creating text track and interactive movies using QuickTime. I also heard from Caroline Rye on her Phd which studied the challenges of recording live events on DVD in order to best capture proceedings. I recorded a video of a short piece of her presentation which took her advice to record from up to four angles at once.

Nili successfully completed her PhD in 2005 - her title was 'Developing Algorithmic Thinking in Middle School Pupils in Israel'. This supervision was a pleasure, since in my own past I had taught programming to school pupils and adults. I acted as her director of studies, but also benefited from advice from colleagues in the School of Education, especially Dr. Gill Robinson.
